IELTS Exam Registration Process
IELTS stands out as the most popular examination required for admissions in a foreign university among Indian students. IELTS is available in two formats: Academic IELTS and General IELTS. Candidates looking for admissions abroad are required to take the Academic test, while those who need IELTS scores for Visa purposes need to take the General test. This article deals with the registration process for the IELTS Academic test.
IELTS Eligibility
The IELTS exam is open to all and there are no specific eligibility criteria. Though different universities may have a specific eligibility criterion, the IELTS, however, has no such specifications. IELTS test is generally recommended for candidates who are 16 years and above.

IELTS Registration
The IELTS examination is available on 48 fixed dates each year (up to four times a month), depending on the local demand. The candidates can choose from any of the 48 days as per their convenience. Also, there is no limit on the number of attempts; candidates can give the IELTS exam as many times as they want or till they reach their dream score. For every attempt, the exam fee is Rs. 13,250.

Steps to register for the IELTS exam
- Step 1: Visit the official IELTS website
- Step 2: Go to the ‘Register for Test’ option
- Step 3: Select your preferred test, Test type and available Test Date in the city of your choice
- Step 4: Enter your personal details
- Step 5: Give your registration details
- Step 6: Upload copies of the first and last page of your Passport
- Step 7: Select the list of colleges you want to send your Score Report to
- Step 8: Verify your details again before making the payment
- Step 9: Pay the examination fees
- Step 10: Once the payment has been made, take a print out of the acknowledgment receipt
Other methods to register for the IELTS Examination
Online – Visit the British Council IELTS registration page and create an online profile. Pay the exam fee (Rs. 13,250) using a debit/credit card. This online mode of registration on the British Council IELTS India website is the fastest and the simplest method and the registrations can be done every day and at any time.
In-person – You can also go to the British Council office or an IDP India officer and register in person. You can download the online form or fill in a paper application at the office. After making the payment via a credit card/debit card, demand draft or ICICI bank deposit slip, you will receive an instant confirmation of your reservation.

IELTS Exam Slot Booking
For booking a slot for the IELTS exam, you need to have a valid passport and a debit/credit card to pay the registration fee of INR 13,250.
Here are some important points to remember while registering for the IELTS exam:
- You must be above the age of 16 to take the IELTS exam
- The information provided in the registration form should match with that on your passport
- You have to take your passport along with you while going for the test
- You have to keep your debit/credit card handy while registering for the IELTS exam
Test Schedule
British Council Global Schedule has allocated 48 days per year for the IELTS exam and a date can be chosen as per your convenience. After you decide on when to start preparing for IELTS, you should pick a date that is a minimum three to four months before the college application deadline. So in case of unsatisfactory performance, you have enough time to reattempt your test.
