CAP: New IIMs Admission Process

Latest Update: The 2020 Common Admission Process (CAP) results for MBA admission 2020 to the 9 new IIMs will be published individually by each of the IIMs. This year, IIM Ranchi conducted IIM CAP 2020. WAT weight-age in CAP is not considered while calculating the final merit list as a lot of candidates could not participate in the WAT process but instead had to attend an online PI round due to the Corona virus lockdown. Among the 9 participating IIMs some will announce their results soon.
The highlights of the Common Admission process and time lines are:
- IIM BODH GAYA / IIM JAMMU / IIM KASHIPUR / IIM RAIPUR / IIM RANCHI / IIM SAMBALPUR / IIM SIRMAUR / IIM TRICHY / IIM UDAIPUR participated in CAP 2020
- IIM Rohtak opted out of CAP 2020 and conducted its own PI-WAT round for final admission
- Shortlist for CAP 2020 was released in February 2020
- CAP 2020 final Merit list will be announced shortly in May 2020, 3rd week
- Each CAP participating IIM will make separate final admission offer in the last week of May 2020 on the basis of PI score obtained in CAP 2020 and weightage on other parameters as per the admission policy followed by each IIM
- Registration & Orientation for admission in each IIM will begin in June 2020 for the new batch of 2020-22
What is CAP 2020?
Common Admission process or CAP 2020 is the final selection round for MBA admission to the new IIMs. CAP 2020 is conducted in the month of March-April 2020 by IIM Ranchi and the score obtained are applicable to all the participating institutes. The CAP 2020 selection process has two parts – Writing Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI) round. However, for the 2020 admissions, the WAT weightage is not considered in preparing the final merit list. CAP 2020 is common to all the participating IIMs and is held across major cities of India. For admission 2020, this process was conducted online for the candidates who could not attend it in person due to the corona virus lockdown.
CAP 2020 Participating IIMs
Out of the 13 new IIMs, 9 IIMs are participating in new IIM Admission process -CAP 2020 for admission to their flagship MBA/PGP programs.
5 IIMs among 6 New IIMs in CAP 2020 Selection Process
Among the six new IIMs, five IIMs – IIM Udaipur, IIM Kashipur, IIM Ranchi, IIM Raipur, and IIM Tiruchirappalli are participating in CAP 2020.
IIM Rohtak is not participating in the Common Admission process 2020 and is conducting its own PI-WAT round.
4 Baby IIMs in CAP 2020
Among the 7 Baby IIMs, IIM Bodh Gaya, IIM Jammu, IIM Sambalpur, IIM Sirmaur are participating in CAP 2020.
These 9 IIMs will individually prepare the final merit list for MBA admission 2020 on the basis of scores obtained in CAP 2020, CAT 2019 exam and other parameters like diversity, work experience, academic profile, depending upon their respective admission criteria.
CAP 2020 Dates
CAP 2020 Dates will be declared by IIM Ranchi, the conducting body. The dates will commence in the second week of February 2020 and will conclude in March 2020.
CAP 2020 Shortlist: 14000 Expected to be Shortlisted
As the number of seats have been increased in each IIM, about 14000 candidates who appeared and qualified the sectional and overall cut offs in CAT 2019 exam will figure in the CAP 2020 shortlist.
IIM Ranchi, the conducting body for Common Admission Process 2020 will announce the CAP 2020 shortlist for all the participating IIMs. The CAP 2020 selection process is the last admission round for selection into the IIMs and consists of Writing Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI).
CAP Shortlist 2020: Intake Expected to Increase Further
Last year, 9 of the CAP participating IIMs had an intake of 1500+ seats. This number is expected to rise before the final admissions.
Now that the IIMs are allowed to award the MBA degree instead of the earlier PGDM and based on the directives from MHRD about increasing the number of seats for the upcoming academic sessions, the list of 9 IIMs with the proposed intake for MBA 2020-22 is:

CAT 2019 score still remains as the primary short-listing criterion of CAP 2020 for new IIMs admission process. CAP 2020 Centers
The Personal Interview and Written Analysis Test for CAP 2020will be conducted at five cities -New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai and Kolkata.IIM Ranchi is in charge of informing the designated CAP 2020 centre and test date for PI & WAT to the short-listed candidates.
New IIM Admission Process: CAP 2020 Rules
The main rules for Common Admission Process (CAP) 2020 MBA/PGDM 2020-22 admission are:
- The same shortlisting process is followed by all the participating IIMs in CAP 2020. Each IIM will prepare a shortlist on the basis of the set criteria and these lists will be further processed by IIM Ranchi, to form a combined list.
- Based on the combined list, the candidates will be called for the Common Admission Process that consists of Common Personal Interview & Written Analysis Test (PI & WAT).
- Request for change of CAP centre should be sent to the admission cell/e-mail ID of IIM Ranchi on or before the first week of Feb 05, 2020. These requests will be accommodated solely at the discretion of IIM Ranchi and the changes will be informed to the candidates.
- Each IIM will take the PI & WAT score of the shortlisted candidates and combine it with other scores-CAT 2020 Score, Profile score and any other score to arrive at their own individual merit list to further prepare the final offer to the students.
- Only the PI & WAT rounds are conducted commonly for all the new IIMs
- The final merit list is made by each individual IIM based on their own selection criteria.
- These criteria will be mentioned on the websites of the respective institutes.
- It is important to note that the CAP 2020 WAT&PI process is compulsory for all the shortlisted candidates.
IIM Nagpur, IIM Amritsar, & IIM Visakhapatnam will not participate in CAP 2020

Components of New IIMs CAP 2020
Common Admission Process (CAP) 2020 for the 9 new IIMs has two components for the final stage of admission. The shortlisted candidates for CAP 2020 have to take part in:
- Common Written Analysis Test (WAT), and
- Personal Interview (PI)
All the 9 CAP participating new IIMs may have similar shortlisting criteria which is announced independently. The final merit list will also be announced separately.
How will I know CAP 2020 detail?
The shortlisted candidates can view the CAP 2020 dates on the website of the respective IIMs. They will also be intimated by e-mail once the CAT 2020 results are declared. CAP 2020 is expected to commence in mid-February 2020. Candidates who are not short listed will not be sent any further communication.
Coordination process between New and old IIMs
Students shortlisted by the older IIMs may not have to appear for CAP, as their PA scores will be shared with IIM Ranchi. The average score of a candidate will be considered if they have attended interviews at more than one of the older IIMs.Finally, the PA Process scores will be shared with the other IIMs participating in CAP, and a merit list will be prepared based on the normalized scores.
7 key steps in New IIMs CAP 2020
Step 1: Shortlist by Individual IIMs
Each IIMs follows an independent short listing process for CAP 2020. About 10 to 12 times of the actual intake number are called by each IIM. Therefore, it is possible to receive multiple callsif a candidate meets the shortlisting criteria of many IIMs.
Step 2: Shortlist to be sent by each IIM to CAP 2020 Coordinator – IIM Ranchi
Each CAP participating IIM will send its list of shortlisted candidates to the CAP 2020 coordinating IIM Ranchi.
Step-3: IIM Ranchi to prepare Final List of Shortlisted Candidates for CAP 2020 Calls
IIM Ranchi will then prepare a final list of candidates for CAP 2020 after combining all the lists sent by each IIM. After this, the shortlisted students will be intimated. Close to 17,000 candidates are expected to be called for CAP 2020.
Step 4: Candidates to appear for PI & WAT Process
CAP 2020 assessment round consists of only Personal Interview (PI) and Written Abilities Test (WAT).There are 5 CAP Centers across India – New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai and Kolkata.
Step 5: IIM Ranchi to send final scores to participating IIMs
Based on the PI &WAT round performance, the scores will be prepared by IIM Ranchi, which will in turn be sent to all the participating IIMs.
Step 6: All IIMs will create their own Final Admission List
Each participating IIM follows an independent admission policy. While preparing the final admission offers, weightages are given to CAT scores, CAP scores, and in some cases Applicants Profile,
There could be a chance that you may not receive a call from the new IIMs while other IIMs could offer you an admission based on your CAT 2020 scores and other selection criteria followed.
