How To Beat Stress And Maintain Good Health During MBA Program
0MBA programs are bound to be full of stress, given the demands of the vast curriculum and time constraints that could lead to, in some cases, intense mental tension and other health issues.
So how does one go about in ensuring that balance between study pressures and maintaining good health? Some of the tips and tricks could be sought out from fellow classmates as happened in the case of Jen Bower, a full-time MBA student at the University of British Columbia’s Sauder School of Business.
In an article in TopMBA, she has shared some of these tips. At the outset, she says you have to pace yourself. Considering the vastness of the assigned readings, you would need to prioritize the assignments in such a way that you select those that have the greatest impact on your grade and learning.
In planning out your work for the week, allot enough time not only for study time but also for going to bed at a reasonable hour. Some of the students take time off and go to sleep when they realise their efficiency levels are low. They find themselves in a much better state of mind to resume work after a restful sleep.
Food intake is often neglected in the daily grind. It is important to ensure that you have nutritious and well-rounded meals during busy days. Meal prepping, the concept of preparing whole meals or dishes in advance, is a good option as it will save time during lunch like walking to the cafe, waiting in lines. All you need to devote is sometime during a lazy Sunday afternoon to prepare the meals that can be stretched for a few days.
Devoting time for physical activity is important. Apart from the daily workout, you could incorporate small bursts of physical activity like getting off the bus one stop early, taking the stairs instead of the elevator and going for a small walk during class breaks.
In colder climes, it would be worthwhile to go outside and soak up the sunshine for about 15 minutes by walking around the building. Such breaks could also be used for meditation sessions that would refresh you.
Family time is essential even in the midst of a very busy schedule. Keep apart some time that would be non-negotiable for the family or friends without affecting your commitment towards studies.
Do not postpone what you would consider unpleasant tasks as these would remain in the back of your mind and cause undue stress or irritation.
While at work or studies limit the distractions in the form of attending to unnecessary e-mails, phone calls from friends or gossip in social networking sites as such interruptions could break your flow of thought and focus leading to delay in completing the task at hand.
Try to maximise productivity during peak times, especially during the morning hours when you are fresh after a good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast. Post-lunch hours, when you feel lethargic or drowsy could be used for activities like social networking.(Image Source: Flickr.com)
