The Chandigarh-based prestigious Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGIMER) has dropped plans to rope in Indian School of Business (ISB), Mohali to conduct a course on hospital administration for the faculty citing enough in-house competency to conduct such a course.
The initiative by PGIMER Director Yogesh Chawla was dropped following objections from senior doctors against hiring ‘outsiders’ when such departments existed in the Institute itself.
On an earlier occasion, Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, (IIM A) had offered free consultancy to manage patient rush in PGIMER. This was also not accepted on the outsider issue.
“We get invitations from premier institutes to provide training to doctors in administration. Ironically, ‘outsiders’ are called when we can train our faculty,” an official in the administration said.
The proposal to bring in ISB to train heads of departments in administration was proposed on the grounds that Doctors lacked management skills as it was not a part of their training.
“But when they have to handle departments as the head, these skills need to be honed. So, we had been talking to ISB on taking few classes for the same,” The Times of India quoted a senior faculty member as saying.

However, most of the senior faculty members in the hospital administration, feel there is no requirement of calling ‘outsiders’ as the teaching programme can be provided at a very reasonable cost by the PGI faculty, the newspaper said.
